Beckham: Stop Knife Crime

THE normally cool David Beckham turned emotional as he spoke about a childhood friend stabbed in an attack which paralysed him, killing all his chances of a football career.

Beckham, 33, said he was just 13 when his friend's brother - Glen Fielder, a budding football star who was about to sign for Leyton Orient - was left seriously wounded after he tried to break up a fight.

He was speaking at a government campaign against violent crimes called Save Our Streets, reported News of The World.

The Telegraph says West End producers are this week discussing the prospect of staging a musical entitled David Beckham - The Theatre of Dreams.

"Beckham's story is a modern-day fairytale of heroes, villains, love, Manchester United and what it means to lead your country,'' explained Mark Archer, the songwriter behind this celebration of Beckham's first 33 years.

New Coach for Becks

The Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer are set to name former United States national team coach Bruce Arena as their new coach, according to a report by ESPN soccernet on Friday.

The impending deal comes after Galaxy general manager Ruud Gullit resigned and president Alexi Lalas was fired on Tuesday.

Lalas, a former member of the American World Cup team, was dismissed after failing to lead the team to the playoffs the last two years. The Galaxy are struggling at 6-8-6 this season and are winless in their last eight matches.

David Beckham has beaten-off competition from a host of stateside sports stars to be named Teen Choice best athlete of 2008.

The former England captain picked up the accolade after thousands of young Americans voted for him at the 10th annual Teen Choice awards.

Beckham, 33, outvoted American superstars - including the LA Lakers' Kobe Bryant and golfer Tiger Woods - to be awarded the surfboard trophy.

And it has all been done in his first year in America.

PR guru Max Clifford told Sky News Online that the award was a significant achievement by the Brit.

South Africa 2010 Needs Beckham

South African football boss Danny Jordaan says England and David Beckham can make the 2010 World Cup the greatest ever.

Jordaan said: "I'd like to see Beckham come here with England.

"In 2002, I was the general coordinator for FIFA in Japan, and in the second round game between Denmark and England I had lined up all the Japanese kids we were using to hold the hand of each player when they walked out.

"I had the kids lined up on the Danish side, then England came out of their dressing room. When the kids saw Beckham they all ran to him to grab his hand.

David Beckham: I'm Settled

David Beckham says he and his family feel "so settled" living in Los Angeles.

The British-born soccer star -- who moved to America with wife Victoria and their three children, Brooklyn; Romeo; and Cruz, after signing a multi-million dollar contract with Los Angeles Galaxy -- says he simply can't imagine living anywhere else now.

He writes on his blog, "It seems like only a few weeks ago I arrived in Los Angeles with my family ready for the next chapter in our lives.
