Emre Can says that he is proud of wearing the number 23 shirt

Liverpool midfielder Emre Can says that he is proud of wearing the number 23 shirt for Liverpool.

Previously, this was the Jersey number for defender Jamie Carragher, who is regarded as one of the finest players for the club in the last two decades. There have also been numerous stars famous for their iconic number 23 shirts and none more so than David Beckham. Even though the former Manchester United midfielder wore the No 7 shirt when he was at United, he adopted the number 23 to much success of the leaving the Red Devils in 2003.

Can was signed from Bayer Leverkusen for around £ 10 million and he has been extremely impressive with his versatility. After being a defender in the regime of Brendan Rodgers, Can has been used in a number of positions by current manager Jurgen Klopp. The German international was recently handed the number 23 jersey, which was last worn by Carragher. After picking up the young Player of the Year award from the club on Thursday, Can says that he wants to emulate the success of other players who have worn the 23 shirt number. The German international will have to go a long way before matching the success of players like Beckham.

"It was huge -- I'm very proud that I can have the number. I know that Carragher is a legend here at Liverpool and hopefully I will be a legend as well.If you see the No. 23, a lot of legends have had the number, like Michael Jordan, Carragher and [David] Beckham.I want to be a legend as well one day and that is why I try always to give me best and we will see what happens," said Can, who will be hoping to lift the Europa League trophy on Wednesday.
